Description
Explore the intricacies of US Landing Craft during World War II with *US Landing Craft of WWII Vol.1*, authored by David Doyle and published by Schiffer Books. This stunning hardback edition, measuring 230 x 230 mm and consisting of 112 pages, dives deep into the legendary designs of landing craft like the LCP(L), LCP(R), LCV, LCVP, LCM, and LCS(L). Not to forget, the LCI (Landing Craft, Infantry) plays a significant role in this captivating narrative. Often referred to as the vessels that transformed the tide of the war, these landing crafts were essential in deploying Allied troops in crucial assaults across North Africa, the Aleutians, Normandy, and beyond in the Pacific Theater. Remarkably, many of these vessels were initially deemed disposable yet ended up serving well beyond WWII, with some even reconfigured for support roles during the Vietnam War. With insights that illuminate their evolution and impact, this volume serves as a must-have for military enthusiasts and historians alike. No less than Dwight Eisenhower described Andrew Jackson Higgins as "the man who won the war for us," referring to the landing craft he perfected. Those craft, the WWII LCP(L), LCP(R), LCV, LCVP, LCM, and LCS(L), are presented in this volume (the first of two on US landing craft), along with the larger LCI (Landing Craft, Infantry). These vessels, built in the tens of thousands, formed the armada that put Allied troops ashore in North Africa, the Aleutians, and Normandy and across the Pacific. Though many of these designs were initially planned as essentially disposable vessels, ultimately many of these continued to serve the nation's need through Vietnam. Some were even heavily laden with rocket launchers and used for close-in support for troops going ashore. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.
